Jazz Night – 2

Jazz Night Helotes Texas music outdoors under the stars
Jazz Night

Jazz Night in Helotes Texas is an unlikely event for a small Texas town more accustomed to country Honky Tonks. Still it draws a very large crowd every year.  There were two groups who played for a solid four hours. They ended the night by jamming together for more than an hour. It was some of the best live jazz I’ve ever experienced. Hopefully this photo montage captures a feeling of the performance at the small town festival.

Photographing musical performance is something I really enjoy. Fortunately musicians of all types are drawn to Central Texas because of the music scene in Austin. You might say the area is a target rich environment for photographers.

This photo was made at an outdoor music event called Jazz a’Round in Helotes Texas. The evening of music is really part of a small town summer festival you might find anywhere in the Midwest.  I’m not sure why they program jazz considering it takes place within sight of a well known Honky Tonk.

On this particular evening I had the good fortune to get close enough to rest my camera on the front edge of the stage for most of the performance. That is simply not possible at most venues but once in a while luck smiles down on a poor camera jockey. When that happens step up do your best.

The event was sponsored in part by a local radio station KRTU 91.7Jazz.  Most people don’t think of excellence and college radio at the same time but it is simply the best jazz station around.  The nice thing is you don’t have to take my word on this because you can listen for yourself on the web from anywhere in the world. Give’m a try they won’t disappoint.

Moods

For some reason there is always a sound track playing when I’m feeling upbeat. Funny the word upbeat was the first thing that popped into my head when thinking about good times. Probably many people have similar associations of music and mood.

The same is true for not-so-good-times as well but why dwell on that fact. When I was young and full political piss and vinegar I asked my father why he was not as motivated as I to change the world. In somewhat more vulgar terms. He took a second to respond and finally smiled and said “I’ve been down that road and now it is time to relax”. I was disappointed with his answer. Now fifty years on, it makes more sense to me. There is a quote from Churchill that could be added here but best to let you look that up for yourself.
